The impetus for wri ting these volumes was the opportunity to teach the subject matter to both undergraduate and graduate students in engineering at several universities. The approach is distinctly different to that which would adopted should such a course be given to students in pure mathematics; in this sense, the teaching of partial differential equations within an engineering curriculum should be viewed in the broader perspective of "The Modelling of Problems in Engineering".

An engineering student should be given the opportunity to appreciate how the various combination of balance laws, conservation equa tions, kinematic constraints, constitutive responses, thermodynamic restric tions, etc.

Differential Equations and Nonlinear Mechanics. Book One of the conference days was dedicated to Professor V. Lakshmikantham in th honor of his 75 birthday. Twelve of the attendees delivered hour long invited talks and remaining thirty-eight presented invited forty-five minute talks. In each of these talks, the focus was on the recent developments in differential equations and nonlinear mechanics and their applications. This book consists of 29 papers based on the invited lectures, and I believe that it provides a good selection of advanced topics of current interest in differential equations and nonlinear mechanics.

This book contributes to the mathematical theory of systems of differential equations consisting of the partial differential equations resulting from conservation of mass and momentum, and of constitutive equations with internal variables. The investigations are guided by the objective of proving existence and uniqueness, and are based on the idea of transforming the internal variables and the constitutive equations.
